How to choose a law firm name
A law firm name has to do three things: tell people who you are, be easy to say and spell when someone recommends you, and stay accurate as the firm grows. Most firms choose one of four styles.
Surname-based names
“Gonzalez Law” or “Gonzalez & Lee” is the traditional choice and the safest under advertising rules, because it describes the lawyers who actually practise there. The downside is that it says nothing about what you do, so your website and Google Business Profile have to do that work.
Practice-based names
“Gonzalez Injury Lawyers” tells a prospective client what you handle before they click. It also reads well as a domain. If you might expand into other areas later, pick a word broad enough to grow into.
Place-based names
“San Antonio Injury Law” sounds local, but a place-only name can read like a public office or legal aid organisation, and it is hard to protect as a trademark. Adding your surname usually fixes both problems.
Brandable trade names
A name like “Cornerstone Family Law” is memorable and easy to market. Trade names are allowed in many states, but some restrict them or require the names of the lawyers to appear alongside. This is the style to check most carefully.
Law firm naming rules to check
Under the ABA Model Rules, a firm name is treated like any other communication about your services: it must not be false or misleading (Rule 7.1). In practice, that means:
- Do not use “& Associates”, “Group” or “Partners” unless the firm really has associates or partners.
- Every lawyer named should be a current member of the firm, unless your state allows retired or deceased partners’ names to stay.
- Avoid names that suggest a connection with a government agency, court or public legal aid organisation.
- Use only the entity suffix you are registered as (PLLC, PC, LLP).
States add their own rules on top of these, so check your state bar’s rules or our state-by-state advertising guides before you file anything.
Check the domain and trademark
Every idea above shows a matching .com and a link to check whether it is free. Short, easy-to-spell domains win: avoid hyphens and odd spellings that clients will get wrong when they type your address from memory. Then search your state’s business registry and the USPTO trademark database for the name. Renaming later means a new domain, new signage and a website migration – our guide on rebrands, firm names and domain changes covers how to move a site without losing your rankings.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good name for a law firm?
A good law firm name is accurate, easy to say and spell, and available as a domain. Surname-based names are the safest under advertising rules; adding your practice area (for example “Gonzalez Injury Law”) tells clients what you do.
Can a law firm use a trade name?
In many states, yes, as long as it is not misleading. Some states restrict trade names or require the lawyers’ names alongside them. Check your state bar’s rules before you register one.
Can I use “& Associates” if I am a solo attorney?
Generally no. Names like “& Associates”, “Group” or “Partners” suggest more lawyers than you have, which advertising rules treat as misleading. The generator flags these when you choose “Just me”.
Should my law firm name include my city?
A city can help clients see you are local, but a name made only of a place and a practice area can sound like a public agency. Most firms pair the city with a surname or keep the city in the tagline instead.
Does the firm name affect SEO?
A little. A name that includes your practice area can help people recognise your result in search, but rankings depend far more on your website content, Google Business Profile and reviews than on the name itself.
Is this law firm name generator free?
Yes. It is free, needs no signup, and runs entirely in your browser.
