Most law firm websites have at least 3 to 5 serious SEO problems that are costing them clients every single day. The good news is that most of these issues take less than an hour to fix — once you know what to look for.
Use this complete law firm website SEO checklist to audit your own site and identify exactly what needs to be fixed to start ranking higher on Google and generating more consultation requests.
1. Your Page Titles Are Not Optimized
Every page on your law firm website needs a unique, keyword-optimized title tag of 55 to 60 characters. Your homepage title should follow the format: Primary Keyword | Law Firm Name | City. For example: “Personal Injury Lawyer in Dallas | Smith Law Firm.” If your page titles say things like “Home” or “Services” you are missing one of the most powerful SEO signals available to you.
Fix it: Install Rank Math or Yoast SEO on WordPress and update the title tag for every page on your site.
2. Missing or Weak Meta Descriptions
A meta description is the short text that appears under your page title in Google search results. While it does not directly affect your ranking, it dramatically affects your click-through rate — which does affect your ranking. Every page needs a unique meta description of 150 to 155 characters that includes your target keyword and a clear call to action like “Book a free consultation today.”
Fix it: Write a unique meta description for every page in Rank Math or Yoast. Never leave it blank and never use the same description on two pages.
3. Only One H1 Tag Per Page
Your H1 tag is the main headline on each page and Google uses it as a major ranking signal. Every page should have exactly one H1 that includes your primary keyword. Many law firm websites either have no H1, multiple H1s, or an H1 that does not contain any relevant keyword. This is one of the most common and easily fixable SEO mistakes on law firm websites.
Fix it: Check every page using your browser’s inspect tool or an SEO plugin. Make sure each page has exactly one H1 containing the primary keyword for that page.
4. No Dedicated Practice Area Pages
A single “Services” page listing everything your firm does is one of the biggest SEO mistakes law firms make. Google cannot rank a generic services page for specific keywords like “divorce lawyer in Phoenix” or “wrongful termination attorney in Miami.” You need a separate, detailed page for every practice area you offer — each targeting a specific keyword.
Fix it: Create individual pages for each practice area with at least 600 words of unique content, a keyword-optimized title, and a local CTA.
5. Your Site Is Slow on Mobile
Google uses mobile-first indexing, meaning it ranks your website based on how it performs on mobile devices — not desktop. If your law firm website takes more than 3 seconds to load on a phone, you are losing both visitors and Google rankings. The most common causes of slow mobile load times are uncompressed images, too many plugins, and unoptimized hosting.
Fix it: Test your site at pagespeed.web.dev — it is free. Compress all images using Smush or ShortPixel. If your score is below 70, consider switching to faster hosting like Cloudways or SiteGround.
6. No Google Business Profile or an Unoptimized One
Your Google Business Profile is arguably the single most important local SEO asset your law firm has. It determines whether you appear in the local map pack — the three listings that appear at the top of local search results and generate the majority of local phone calls for law firms.
Fix it: Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile at business.google.com. Add your correct firm name, address, phone number, website, practice areas, hours, and at least 5 high-quality photos. Then actively collect Google reviews — they are a major local ranking factor.
7. Inconsistent NAP Information Across the Web
NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone number. Google cross-references your firm’s NAP information across dozens of online directories — Yelp, Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, and more. If your firm name, address, or phone number is slightly different across these directories, it confuses Google and hurts your local rankings.
Fix it: Search your firm name on Google and check every directory listing. Make sure your NAP is identical across all of them. Use a tool like BrightLocal to find and fix inconsistencies at scale.
8. No Schema Markup
Schema markup is code that you add to your website to help Google understand what your pages are about. For law firms, the most important schema types are LocalBusiness schema, Attorney schema, and FAQPage schema. Websites with FAQ schema often appear with expandable questions directly in Google search results — significantly increasing click-through rates without any change in ranking position.
Fix it: Install Rank Math — it adds schema markup automatically for most page types. For FAQ schema, add a FAQ section to your key pages and enable FAQ schema in Rank Math settings.
9. No Blog or Outdated Blog Content
Law firm blogs are one of the most powerful and underused SEO tools available. Every blog post is a new keyword you can rank for and a new potential client you can capture. Long-tail question keywords like “how long does a divorce take in Texas” or “what to do after a car accident in Florida” have very low competition and very high conversion intent — but only if you write about them.
Fix it: Publish at least two blog posts per month targeting long-tail questions your potential clients are searching for. Each post should be at least 800 words, include your target keyword naturally, and link to the relevant practice area page on your site.
10. No Internal Linking Strategy
Internal links — links from one page on your website to another — are one of the most overlooked SEO tools. They help Google understand the structure of your site, distribute ranking authority across your pages, and keep visitors on your site longer. Most law firm websites have almost no internal links between their pages.
Fix it: Every blog post should link to at least one practice area page. Every practice area page should link to your contact page and at least two related blog posts or other practice area pages. Do this for every page on your site.
